What is obesity surgery?
Obesity (bariatric) surgery refers to operations that aim at weight loss and control of obesity-related diseases in patients who have not achieved lasting results with diet, exercise and medication. In Kayseri, it is planned at Acıbadem Kayseri Hospital with a team including a dietitian and a psychologist.
Who is it for?
- Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher
- BMI of 35–40 with conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnoea
- Under certain conditions, uncontrolled type 2 diabetes with a BMI of 30–35 (metabolic surgery)
The final decision is made after examination, tests and a multidisciplinary assessment.
Procedures
- Sleeve gastrectomy: about 75–80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically.
- Gastric bypass: the stomach is reduced and connected to the small intestine; often preferred with reflux or diabetes.
After surgery
The hospital stay is usually 2–3 days, followed by a staged diet from liquids to soft foods. Regular follow-up and lifestyle changes are key to long-term success.
Every surgical procedure carries potential risks. The right treatment can only be determined after an examination.
